While we all know that we need to service our car regularly, some people don’t understand why it’s as important as it is. A service on your motor vehicle is a comprehensive check over to ensure that it runs at its best, maintains its value and keeps you safe on our busy roads.
Engine oil and filter
Changing the engine oil and filter is a very important start to a service. As an engine runs, the oil is contaminated by the byproducts of combustion. Small particles of carbon and metal cause the engine oil to degrade and lose its lubricative properties, so it gradually becomes less effective over time and will eventually need to be replaced.
Fortunately, as technology has progressed so too has engine oil quality and the engine oils of today are highly effective at keeping the engine components lubricated and operating optimally by minimising wear and tear through friction caused by moving parts. We use and recommend HiTec engine oil.
Suspension, wheels, tyres and brakes
During a vehicle service, all aspects of the vehicle are comprehensively checked for signs of damage. The underside of the car is inspected and the suspension system (which is comprised of components such as shock absorbers, struts and springs, bushings, bearings, and joints, linkages, wheels and tyres) is checked for damaged or worn components.
As the suspension system affects the steering system and is responsible for supporting roadholding and handling and the overall ride quality, it plays an important role in road safety and must be kept in top working condition.
The tyres and wheel are removed and the brakes are inspected for signs of wear and component leakage or failure. Any suspension part that isn’t visible from the underside of the vehicle is checked with the wheels removed to enhance visibility. Once all components have been checked, the wheels are refitted and the tyres are pressure checked. The exhaust is also inspected for leaks and damage.
Under bonnet checks
All components under the bonnet are checked to make sure important components such as the air filter are clean and working correctly, and all fluids are checked and topped up or replaced. The condition and tension of the drive belts (which drives the alternator, power steering, water and air pumps, etc.) are checked, as are all lights, windshield wipers and spray jets.
The interior of the vehicle is also checked as part of a full service. Seat slide operation is inspected, as are the seatbelts, which are one of your most vehicle’s most important safety devices. All seatbelts are checked for defects, locking ability and signs of wear or damage. All windows are checked for correct operation and the tint condition is assessed.
As you can see, servicing your car involves so much more than just changing the oil. It’s important to make sure all aspects of the vehicle are kept in good order, not only to keep your car running smoothly for years to come but also for road safety. After all, as motorists we all have an obligation to ensure our vehicles can be safely driven on the road.
